Monthly Coaching Special Interest Group
This popular Special interest Group meets on the second Tuesday of the month.
This month featuring special guest speaker David Rock:
Topic:Coaching: a happy virus that can bring about culture change?
Many organizations have taken on the idea of ''everyone is responsible for quality''over the last decade. What about the idea of ''everyone is responsible for coaching others''? What difference could that make to an organization''s culture?
Coaches are inspired, motivated, supportive individuals who are passionate about helping their people fulfill their potential. They listen, they encourage, they support, they care. Imagine if you could say the same about the majority of managers in the workplace.
David Rock is passionate about transforming corporate cultures through coaching and spends most of his time doing just that through his organization Results Coaching Systems based in the US, UK, South Africa, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.
In this session David will share case studies from organizations tackling this challenge, exploring what''s working and what''s not. He will share strategies for injecting the ideas of coaching into the culture and how to keep it growing, and highlight practical steps that internal or external consultants can take to start along this journey.
The SIG is free to ASTDNY members. Nonmembers are invited to attend the first meeting free and are then invited to join ASTDNY. Be sure to register for this event and bring picture ID. For more information, contact SIG chair, Flo Mauri at flomauri@aol.com.

Chapter Workshop: Crucial Confrontations (Joseph Grenny, the presenter, discussed his book on the Today Show on October 23!)
Best-selling author Joseph Grenny presents Crucial Confrontations a special workshop based on the new book "Crucial Confrontations: Tools for Resolving Broken Promises and Bad Behavior."
Joseph will be appearing on The Today Show this weekend, on Saturday morning October 23rd
“If you read only one ‘management'book this decade, I'd insist that it be Crucial Confrontations.” —Tom Peters, author of In Search of Excellence.
The Topic This evening workshop teaches how to deal with violated expectations.
You will learn to not only solve the problem at hand, but also strengthen the work relationship at the same time.
The ability to master crucial confrontations is a core competency for the 21st century. It will have a huge impact on your organization and your career. Behind the problems that routinely plague organizations, you''''ll find people unable to deal with failed promises. When commitments are broken but no consequences follow, then accountability suffers and the organizational culture degrades.
The Learning Objectives As a result of attending this workshop and participating in the exercises, you will be able to:
· recognize situations where you are avoiding crucial issues · understand the problem, so that you can confront the right issue · prepare yourself emotionally for the crucial event · navigate the “hazardous half-minute” at the opening of a confrontation · make it motivating: confront without threats, so that they are more likely to care and act.
THIS EVENT WILL SELL OUT. To ensure your seat, please send your payment information in quickly to contact@astdny.org or fax (212) 799-7346. Once the event fills up, you will be put on a wait-list. Those on the wait-list will not be charged.
Cost $65 plus $15 materials fee, for ASTD members and special guests $85 plus $15 materials fee, for non-members
$20 discount for pre-payment received by midnight, October 25th.
Within 24 hours of receiving your online registration, we will email you an invoice containing instructions for faxing or mailing your payment.

Monthly Career Development and Coaching Special Interest Group
This popular Special interest Group meets on the second Tuesday of the month.
This month''s topic:
Career Success: Aligning Your Goals and Values
Whether you are expanding on new career possibilities, discovering your niche, creating a new working identity, or have clients with whom you are exploring avenues for career success, you will benefit from tonight''s coaching tips. Some powerful questions we will delve into are:
Are you in balance with your goals and values and the energy you put forth in your work and home life? Are you in integrity with who you are? Do you have clarity of purpose? Is your vision cloudless or in the clouds? Tonight''s meeting will focus on basic steps to clear thinking patterns.
In defining your vision, you will need clarity on who you are and what you want. To assist and support you with your goals, we will explore the following Four Action Steps:
§ Ask the self-knowledge questions
§ Identify your values and beliefs
§ Identify the barriers, blocks and limited thinking patterns
§ Take focused and strategic action
Through these action steps, Flo will share with you strategies on how to effectively address priorities and use coaching tools to stay focused. She will assist you with developing a new awareness of self, see how values are linked to vision and how negative thinking patterns shade perception. By modifying our perception, we can alter our emotional state and behavior. Any shift that occurs will increase our sense of forward movement and being in the flow.
Flo Mauri is the president and founder of Thinking Well Consulting, providing coaching and training services to individual and corporate clients. She is an affiliate of The Graduate School of Coaching, a board member of the ASTD Metro chapter, and a member of The International Association of Coaches. Flo is currently a faculty member at NYU, School of Continuing and Professional Studies.
The SIG is free to ASTDNY members. Nonmembers are invited to attend the first meeting free and are then invited to join ASTDNY. Be sure to register for this event and bring picture ID. For more information, contact SIG chair, Flo Mauri at flomauri@aol.com.

Panel: Should Training Marry Coaching?
Narrowly defined, training focuses on knowledge and competency, while coaching focuses on behavioral change. This panel discussion examines what goes into a judicious marriage of training and coaching, for the purpose of producing organizational change.
Everyone concerned about effective use of the “training” budget will be interested in this exploration of the practicalities of mixing training and coaching activities. For a consultant, the result of the right mix is more successful programs and happier clients. For those within an organization, the result is a development program that achieves more organizational objectives.
The Learning Objectives Participants will gain first-hand knowledge from leading practitioners in training and coaching, including: • Comparison of the differing impact the two disciplines have on organizational change • Practical tips to determine the most effective mix of coaching and training

Career Coaching and Development Special Interest Group
This evening's topic is about you:
“Presenting … Yourself!” with special guest speaker Liz Keever.
Top to toe – unite your image. We will cover elements of creating a vision of yourself and the service you provide. All of us communicate largely without content. In fact, research shows us that 83% of communication is visual and auditory. We listen to the tone of the voice more than the content. It is said, that perception is reality. This workshop will enable participants to become aware of those impressions and perceptions that have an impact on others. We will discuss how to create and communicate a business image that speaks as one.
Liz Keever is the founder of Vocal Advantage. She has been instructing business professionals and performers since 1983. Liz was the Regional Training Manager for ROLM/IBM Corporation in New York. She left ROLM/IBM to embark on the life of an entrepreneur and has never looked back. Liz consulted as an image consultant for executives and now combines her knowledge of visual and verbal communication into her work. Her speaking tips have been published in New York Business Woman magazine. Liz continues to be an active professional performer. She brings her skills as a businesswoman and her passion for teaching to her role as a communication and public speaking coach.
Special Interest Groups are free to ASTDNY members. Non-members are invited to attend the first three meetings free and are then required to join ASTDNY. Be sure to register for this event and bring picture ID. For more information about this SIG contact SIG chair Flo Mauri at flomauri@aol.com.

Toni Hodges:Special half-Day Workshop: Discovering ROI Alternatives
Do you struggle with showing the value of your training programs? Do you think Return on Investment (ROI) evaluations are time-consuming and expensive? Wouldn''t it be great if there were faster, cost-effective methods to estimate the benefits of your training programs?
ASTDNY invites you to take part in a special half-day workshop where you will learn how to conduct two powerful and cost-effective ROI alternatives: Return on Expectation (ROE™) and ROI Forecasting.
• Return on Expectation (ROE) – provides estimates from knowledgeable sources after the training program has completed. Although an ROE costs only a fraction of a full-blown ROI Impact Study, its results are “dead-on” when compared to ROI Study data.
• ROI Forecasting – projects ROI before the training program is implemented. This allows project planners and managers the chance to make key decisions such as reducing costs, changing or negotiating with vendors, raising the bar for the expected benefits or perhaps even eliminating the program before it begins. This process is being used successfully by many organizations today.
In additional to learning about ROE and ROI Forecasting, you will be given an opportunity to practice both techniques using actual case studies and tools, which you can then take back to your own organization. All participants will receive a copy of Toni''s book: Linking Learning and Performance: a Practical Guide to Measuring Learning and On-the-Job Application.
About the Presenter
Toni Hodges is a recognized expert in measuring human performance. She was selected as one of ASTD''s “Training''s New Guard – 2001,” and was featured in the May 2001 issue of Training and Development magazine. In 2000 the ROI Network™ named Hodges “Practitioner of the Year,” and she is currently on its Advisory Committee. In 1999, the Measurement and Evaluation program that she developed for Bell Atlantic was chosen as a best practice from among over 200 companies. She has published numerous articles, and was editor of ASTD''s best selling “In Action Series: Measuring Learning and Performance.” She is also the author of “Linking Learning and Performance: a Practical Guide to Measuring Learning and On-the-Job Application” and “Building Support for Evaluation” (in press).

TURNING MANAGERS INTO COACHES
Managers today have more pressure than ever to get results from their teams, and yet often they are promoted through job specific expertise: they know how to get the job done, but they may not have the people and management skills to match. In the workplace, managers that truly have effective coaching skills produce significantly better results. People do better work, for longer, and contribute to the organization in many more ways. Companies that have brought in a coaching culture report significantly reduced staff turnover, increased productivity, greater happiness and satisfaction at work.
This content-rich program covers topics such as:
• Why it's time to turn managers into coaches
• The underlying principles of coaching
• The gap between the manager and coach
• The challenges and opportunities of turning managers into coaches
• Case studies from several large organizations around the world
About the presenter :
David Rock is a major thought leader in the global coaching movement. As the founder and CEO of Results Coaching Systems he has been responsible for training thousands of professional coaches throughout the world. ASTD Special Book Club Event: featuring author Herb Cohen
Herb Cohen is the author of “Negotiate This! By Caring, but not T-H-A-T Much.”
he ASTDNY Book Club invites you to a very special author''''s night with master negotiator Herb Cohen. In this interactive session Herb will talk with you about his latest book: Negotiate This! By Caring, but not T-H-A-T Much.
To prepare for this event, we encourage you to read Herb''''s book (also look for book club meetings discussing his book on this website).
Herb Cohen is an internationally recognized author, speaker, and negotiator. His 1980 book You Can Negotiate Anything became a New York Times bestseller and a standard reference in the field. He has advised both President Carter and then-Governor Reagan about the Iranian hostage crisis and predicted the outcome with uncanny accuracy. President Clinton sent Cohen to Peru to aid in freeing 500 government officials and business executives taken hostage by a revolutionary group. He has been the key negotiator in a number of important corporate and labor negotiations and has represented a wide range of individuals in negotiating contracts and settlements.
In his book, Cohen explains in detail how he achieved his successes, but he also speaks candidly about his occasional missteps in handling important assignments. He teaches how to get what we want, not through manipulation or deceit, but by taking a fresh perspective on relationships, looking beneath the surface for opportunities to accomplish our ends. His self-effacing presentation is engaging, powerful, and educational. “Negotiation is the game of life,” says Cohen. “Truly, it is the lifeblood of relationships.”

The ASTDNY Chapter Book Club is structured so that a group of people have the opportunity to read and discuss selected “hot books” books in the field of people management. At meetings, members are invited to discuss the book, share their points of view, and debate the issues.
