Monthly Coaching Special Interest Group
This month's topic: Achieving Flow (Avoiding Striving)
The theme of the evening will be exploring Flow from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's book Flow, The Psychology of Optimal Experience. You will learn tools and concepts on how to provide optimal experiences for yourself and coaching clients. We'll do some hands on exercises to emphasize Csikszentmihalyi's characteristics of flow: --Chance of completion, Opportunity to concentrate --Clear goals, Immediate feedback --Deep involvement, Transcending distractions & frustrations of daily life --A sense of control over your actions, Concern for self disappears
Anne Richter, founder of Creative Pathways, has been coaching and teaching classes and workshops in creativity for the past 7 years. She is a practicing artist who worked as a legal administrator for 14 years before founding the practice of her dreams, teaching creativity.
Quote from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's book Flow, The Psychology of Optimal Experience.:“Each of us is born with two contradictory sets of instructions: a conservative tendency, made up of instincts for self-preservation…and an expansive tendency made up of instincts for exploring, for enjoying novelty and risk...the first tendency requires little encouragement... the second can wilt if not cultivated…if too many obstacles are put in the way of risk and exploration, the motivation to engage in creative behavior is easily extinguished.”

April Main Event: Mediation to Resolve Workplace Disputes
Nancy Kramer and Barbara Swartz present Mediation To Resolve Workplace Disputes: What It Is; How It Works; What It Can Do For You And Your Organization
The Topic Every organization has its share of conflict and every human resources department expends considerable energy dealing with interpersonal and structural conflicts. Come hear two experts in the field of workplace mediation, as they explain how it works, and what it can do for you and your organization. You might already know that mediation can help companies avoid costly employee litigation. But did you know that that mediation has a proven track record of improving employee morale and productivity?
Though methods of mediation vary, the process is usually shaped by the parties, in a way that arbitration and litigation are not. As a result, everyone in more likely to follow through with what they have agreed. The outcomes are dramatic: Studies show that three out of four problems that go to mediation are totally or significantly resolved—quickly.
Mediation is not just for large corporations. Nancy and Barbara will draw on their experiences with large and small organizations to outline what goes into developing a mediation program, and they will describe the specific gains to be expected. To get you started, they will suggest ways to start easing into mediation right away.
The Learning Objectives
By attending this evening you will:
--Learn how mediation differs from counseling and arbitration. --Hear several case studies of how mediation works. --Gain an understanding of how you can use mediation to help you and your organization.
The Speakers Barbara Swartz and Nancy Kramer are attorneys and experienced workplace mediators who have handled hundreds of workplace mediations. They have worked on sexual discrimination; harassment, cultural and personality clashes; racial and gender discrimination and employee concerns about compensation, probation and advancement.
Cost: $30.00, ASTD-NY members; $50.00, non-members $10, Students with ID
Members and Non-members save $10 if registered and paid by April 4.

Workshop: Managing Difficult Conversations
When it comes to tough conversations, many of us are unsure what to do. We tend to put off difficult conversations or jump in blindly and hope for the best. Either way, we often don''''t get the results we want. But it doesn't have to be this way. Doug Sundheim of Clarity Consulting will introduce participants to a model for moving from conflict to collaboration that was developed by Eryn Kalish for use in conflict resolution between Israelis and Palestinians, as well as in the workplace.
The Learning Objectives In this workshop, you will learn how to: -Identify the conversations you find difficult - Effectively deal with the triggers and strong feelings that arise - Plan for the conversations to have them go more smoothly - Integrate this learning into a management development program
The Speaker Doug Sundheim, president of Clarity Consulting, is no stranger to the firing line of business. He started a 100-person catering company in his early 20's and spent 7 years in business development in the advertising and consulting fields. A frequent speaker on business topics, he has delivered talks at Columbia University, The Society for Human Resources, and The World Research Group conference.
