The book is Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything
By Steven D. Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner
FROM THE PUBLISHER
Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? How much do parents really matter? What kind of impact did Roe v. Wade have on violent crime? These may not sound like typical questions for an economist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He is a much heralded scholar who studies the stuff and riddles of everyday life -- from cheating and crime to sports and child rearing -- and whose conclusions regularly turn the conventional wisdom on its head. He usually begins with a mountain of data and a simple, unasked question. Some of these questions concern life-and-death issues; others have an admittedly freakish quality. Thus the new field of study contained in this book: freakonomics. Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, Levitt and co-author Stephen J. Dubner show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives -- how people get what they want, or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing. In Freakonomics, they set out to explore the hidden side of ... well, everything. The inner workings of a crack gang. The truth about real-estate agents. The myths of campaign finance. The telltale marks of a cheating schoolteacher. The secrets of the Ku Klux Klan. What unites all these stories is a belief that the modern world, despite a surfeit of obfuscation, complication, and downright deceit, is not impenetrable, is not unknowable, and -- if the right questions are asked -- is even more intriguing than we think. All it takes is a new way of looking. Steven Levitt, through devilishly clever and clear-eyed thinking, shows how to see through all the clutter. Freakonomics establishes this unconventional premise: If morality represents how we would like the world to work, then economics represents how it actually does work. It is true that readers of this book will be armed with enough riddles and stories to last a thousand cocktail parties. But Freakonomics can provide more than that. It will literally redefine the way we view the modern world.

ASTDNY July Chapter meeting: The Science of Test Creation
Discussion on Best Practices in Test Development and Validation
Many training departments treat question writing, exam construction, and data analysis as afterthoughts. Inexperienced employees and vendors are often called upon to write questions, and the rich database of exam history is left unanalyzed.
There is a science to constructing and analyzing exams. Proper application of this science can help you create valid exams and use the data collected to its fullest potential. This presentation will provide a brief overview of some major topics in test construction and psychometrics.
Additional presentation: “How to Choose Great Training and Employee Survey Technology”
The wave of technology that now surrounds Learning and Development Professionals is often confusing and overwhelming.
So what technology can easily be used to get critical information? Survey tools? Dashboards? Scorecards? What really is turnkey? What is working at other firms? How do I choose something that fits my firm? And my budget?
For many firms, delivering useful pre and post-training surveys can be a daunting task. This event will highlight the tactics that experts use to gather key employee feedback, reduce costs, improve reliability, and accelerate performance.

The book is
Blink : The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, by Malcolm Gladwell
Blink is about the first two seconds of looking--the decisive glance that knows in an instant. Gladwell, the best-selling author of The Tipping Point, campaigns for snap judgments and mind reading with a gift for translating research into splendid storytelling. Building his case with scenes from a marriage, heart attack triage, speed dating, choking on the golf course, selling cars, and military maneuvers, he persuades readers to think small and focus on the meaning of "thin slices" of behavior. The key is to rely on our "adaptive unconscious"--a 24/7 mental valet--that provides us with instant and sophisticated information to warn of danger, read a stranger, or react to a new idea.

Book Club Special Interest Group
Join the book club for a discussion on the book The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable by Patrick M. Lencioni.
All are welcome!
Please note – non-ASTDNY members are welcome to participate for two sessions, prior to becoming ASTDNY members.
In keeping with the parable style, Lencioni (The Five Temptations of a CEO) begins by telling the fable of a woman who, as CEO of a struggling Silicon Valley firm, took control of a dysfunctional executive committee and helped its members succeed as a team. Story time over, Lencioni offers explicit instructions for overcoming the human behavioral tendencies that he says corrupt teams (absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and inattention to results). Succinct yet sympathetic, this guide will be a boon for those struggling with the inherent difficulties of leading a group. 100,000 first printing.

Book Club Special Interest Group
Join the book club for a discussion on the book “Strategy is Destiny” by Robert Burgelman. All are welcome! [Please note – non-ASTDNY members are welcome to participate for two sessions, but then must become members].
Book Description: “Strategy is Destiny” by Robert Burgelman.
“Granted unprecedented access to Intel, Stanford Business School professor Burgelman was able to observe how the company's strategies at key moments helped shape its history. Specifically, he looks closely at the decisions Intel's top managers made as the company evolved from being a memory-chip company to a firm whose product is now a central building block of the Internet. From there he works outward, drawing four distinct lessons from the Intel story: embrace a strategy as a way of imposing order; when that strategy proves useless, spend a lot of time studying why (since the forces rendering your strategy worthless might lead to a huge opportunity); capitalize on your core strengths and search out new prospects simultaneously; and manage the change process aggressively. His lessons could be greatly useful to senior managers grappling with how to integrate strategy into day-to-day operations.” From Publishers Weekly - Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.
